in equilibrium with metallothionein at pH 7.4 after 48 hours. We are currently reexamining copper binding to normal metallothionein and metallothionein from subjects with hepatolenticular degeneration under different experimental conditions. If, as Scheinberg suggests, copper is bound to metallothionein in the cuprous form, our interpretation of the data is indeed incorrect, and I will take full responsibility for dubious experimental design and incorrect interpretation of results. However, before submitting to Scheinberg's refutation, I would like to see experimental evidence proving that copper is bound in the cuprous form. Scheinberg has stated that "it is almost certain that copper is bound as cuprous ions . . ." (italics mine) and referenced experiments demonstrating that copper is reduced by thiols. Scheinberg has overlooked the fact that we are dealing with a unique protein-a protein in which an average of three cysteinyl residues are involved in the binding of each metal atom (2). A complex involving three sulfhydryl groups, possibly another electron-pair donor, and a cupric ion would preclude oxidation-reduction and permit equilibrium to be obtained in a solution containing cupric ion. Indeed, cupric complexes with two cysteine molecules have been described (3). Thus, the presence of a thiol and a cupric ion does not necessarily dictate oxidation-reduction. G. W. Recent subsidence of the Venice Lagoon from continuous GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar

[1] Coastal regions are increasingly affected by larger storms and rising sea level predicted by global warming models, aggravating the situation in the city of Venice where tidal-induced seasonal flooding coupled with natural and anthropogenic subsidence have been perennial problems. In light of accelerated efforts to protect Venice from the rise in sea level we assess land subsidence in the V...

Sensing the Land Subsidence in the Venice Lagoon by Interferometric Point Target Analysis

Land subsidence is a severe geologic hazard threading the lowlying coastal areas worldwide. Monitoring land subsidence has been significantly improved over the last few years by space borne earth observation techniques based on SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) Interferometry. Within the INLET Project, funded by Magistrato alle Acque di Venezia – Venice Water Authority (VWA) and Consorzio Venezia ...

Reply to comment by P. Teatini et al. on “Recent subsidence of the Venice Lagoon from continuous GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar”

[1] Unlike most published scientific comments, the comment submitted by P. Teatini, L. Tosi and T. Strozzi on Bock et al. [2012] does not dispute the scientific merits of our study, but rather reinforces its approach and main results regarding Venice subsidence. Their main points appear to be that our study (1) did not cite the two last papers that they published [Tosi et al., 2010; Teatini et ...

Natural versus anthropogenic subsidence of Venice

We detected land displacements of Venice by Persistent Scatterer Interferometry using ERS and ENVISAT C-band and TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed X-band acquisitions over the periods 1992-2010 and 2008-2011, respectively. By reason of the larger observation period, the C-band sensors was used to quantify the long-term movements, i.e. the subsidence component primarily ascribed to natural processes. ...

Ers and Envisat Sar Interferometry to Measure Land Subsidence in the Venice Lagoon on Natural and Artificial Point Targets

The Venice Lagoon, Italy, is a unique worldwide environment which is presently vulnerable due to loss in surface elevation as a result of land subsidence referred to the mean sea level. Land displacements in the Venice coastland have been determined over time by traditional monitoring techniques (i.e., spirit leveling and GPS). Recently, SAR-based analyses have been used to complement the groun...
